About this Space
The Writing Center Multimedia Tutoring Resource is designed to be an open-source wiki for posting print-based and multimedia tutor training materials for Writing Center and classroom use. In this resource you will find video scenarios of tutoring situations along with class discussion materials that accompany each video, and also print-based tutoring scenarios created by students and faculty teaching tutor training courses and workshops. Additionally, we have included sample assignments if faculty would like to have their students contribute to this resource.
About the Tutoring Scenarios
With each of the tutoring scenario videos, we asked students to show "flawed" sessions or present problems for discussion. The idea was not to present the "perfect" tutoring scenario, but rather to present a scenario that can faclitate discussion among tutors or tutors-in-training. To achieve this goal, each video or text-based scenario is presented with a short introduction that sets the scene, a set of discussion questions, and a set of references for more information.
Contributing to this Space
This space functions as a wiki, allowing for others to view, edit, and add content. We would love to have other Writing Centers, Tutor Training Courses, or anyone else interested in tutoring contribute content to this wiki. To be included as one of the editors and/or contributors of this wiki, please contact Dana Driscoll to be added to our contributor list. The goal is to create a shared resource with the Writing Center community that all can benefit from.
History of the Writing Center Tutoring Video Resource
The Writing Center Tutoring Resource was first envisioned when Dana Driscoll and Lori Ostergaard, Assistant Professors of Writing and Rhetoric at Oakland University, decided to engage in a collaborative, multimedia project with our two sections of WRT 320 in the Winter 2010 semester. Our WRT 320 class, titled Peer Tutoring in Composition, is a course that introduces students to Writing Center Theory, one-on-one tutoring, and functions as our tutor training course for the Oakland University Writing Center.
We were interested in creating more multimedia resources for tutor training, and wanted something that could be shared with and expanded by the larger Writing Center community. Through our students' collaborations and class discussions, we identified appropriate topics for videos and scenarios. Students working in groups of 3-5 wrote scripts, tutored each other to improve the scripts, filmed, and edited the video. On March 30, 2010, we held a screening of the videos for the two classes and guests, discussing the issues at play in each video. Students from Dana Driscoll's Fall 2009 WRT 320 class also contributed text-based scenarios.
